48 amp vs 80 amp charger for a Chevrolet Silverado EV
For the trims below, EPA data shows the car accepts more than a 48 A charger delivers (11.52 kW). A 80 A charger (19.2 kW) saves up to about 8.5 hours on an empty-to-full charge (estimate). It needs a 100 A breaker instead of 60 A.
Per trim
| Trim | Empty→full at 48 A | Empty→full at 80 A | Miles per 8 h at 48 A | Miles per 8 h at 80 A | Why we think it accepts more |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Silverado EV Ext Range WT | 17.6 h | 10.6–11.5 h | 193 mi | 321 mi (max) | EPA 240 V time implies an average of 17.6 kW, so it must accept more than 11.52 kW at times |
| 2025 Silverado EV 5WT (19 kW Charger) | 17.7 h | 10.7 h | 191 mi | 315 mi | EPA trim name states a 19 kW onboard charger |
| 2026 Silverado EV Max Range WT (19kW Charger) | 21.2 h | 12.8 h | 186 mi | 307 mi | EPA trim name states a 19 kW onboard charger |
| 2025 Silverado EV 8WT | 21.3 h | 12.8–13.3 h | 185 mi | 308 mi (max) | EPA 240 V time implies an average of 18.5 kW, so it must accept more than 11.52 kW at times |
| 2026 Silverado EV Ext Range (19kW Charger) | 17.5 h | 10.6 h | 176 mi | 290 mi | EPA trim name states a 19 kW onboard charger |
| 2025 Silverado EV (19 kW Charger) | 17.7 h | 10.8 h | 176 mi | 290 mi | EPA trim name states a 19 kW onboard charger |
Estimates: energy for the full EPA range (kWh/100 mi × range ÷ 100, at the wall) ÷ charging power. Where EPA states the onboard charger we cap at it. Otherwise the 80 A figure is a range: from full 19.2 kW down to the average power implied by EPA's 240 V time, because the true onboard limit isn't in EPA data. Real charging tapers near 100%. For the other 6 trim(s) EPA data doesn't show more than 11.52 kW being accepted, so an 80 A charger may not help them: 2025 Silverado EV 5WT (11 kW Charger), 2026 Silverado EV Ext Range (11kW Charger), 2026 Silverado EV Std Range WT (11kW Charger), 2025 Silverado EV (11 kW Charger), 2026 Silverado EV Std Range (11kW Charger), 2025 Silverado EV 2WT.
Does it matter day to day?
Most drivers plug in overnight and rarely charge from empty. Both chargers add 193+ miles in 8 hours for the most efficient qualifying trim. The 80 A option mainly helps with long daily drives, short charging windows on time-of-use plans, or sharing one charger between two cars. The bigger circuit can cost more to install (wire size, panel capacity), and that cost isn't in our data.
